Land Too Small For A Tractor?

You have a little bit acreage, but not a large amount. Maybe you only have 10 acres or so. It seems kind of silly, almost, to get a tractor, doesn't it? You don't have a place to store it, as space is at a minimum, but you have some jobs that just need the horsepower and tools that tractors can provide. Maybe you've been borrowing a neighbor's tractor, but it's kind of inconvenient. Maybe you've been thinking about finding some ox for that old drawn tiller on your dad's back 40.

So this might be the first time you've heard the term 'compact tractor'. Yes, much like cars, tractors come in a variety of sizes, some quite small. Many aren't much larger than a riding lawnmower- especially when you get into the sub-compact class. (As a bonus, many can have mow decks installed easily, which means you can eliminate the need for an additional piece of equipment.) They're small enough to store more easily than a standard tractor, but are extremely useful and have the kind of power you've been needing.

Some of the tools you can get for a compact tractor:

  • Bucket- for loading and loading (weight capacity is specific to model, so be sure to check what your tractor can lift before you get carried away)
  • Rotary cutter- for mowing down brush and tall weeds
  • Rotary tiller-  for tilling up the earth so you can start planting.
  • Box blade - for landscaping, grading, and so on
  • Backhoe- for digging a trench or hole
  • Mower decks- already mentioned, for mowing

These are just some of the attachments available for compact tractors! Rakes, hitches, blades, post hole diggers, snow blowers, bale spears, pallet forks... the list goes on and on. The versatility and variety of these smaller machines is really stunning, and you will be surprised at how much more you'll be able to do.

In addition to all these tools, many companies that make the compact tractors know that climate control can be necessary, and you can often add on a climate controlled cab to many of the models, even if it doesn't come stock. (Many varieties do come stock with climate control, as well.)

In general many of these compact tractors are, new, between $15,000 and $20,000, which is quite reasonable, for a new tractor. Now, of course, this depends on where you get it, and what kind of sales, and what features you are looking for.
